Ancillary Justice Ack-Ack Macaque

The 2013 BSFA Award winners were announced at a ceremony last night at the 65th Eastercon at the Crowne Plaza, Glasgow.  In the Best Novel category we have a tie between Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice and Gareth L. Powell’s Ack_Ack Macaque.  Our congrats to both on the shared win.  To see the full results in all categories check out the official announcement on the BSFA website.

What do you think of this result?  Ancillary Justice seems like it’s no surprise but what about Ack-Ack?  The cover has always intrigued me – I mean, what’s not to love about a cigar-smoking, gun-toting chimpanzee airship pilot?

Ancillary Justice was my favorite book of last year, so I’m not surprised that it was nominated for so many awards and am glad that it won.

The cover is what made me not want to read Ack-Ack Macaque. (I love animals, but primates are at the bottom of the list.) I checked out the comments on Amazon and see that this book got good reviews. But, I’ve read books that got glowing reviews on Amazon that I thought were poorly written and had very little plot. I also see that it has a sequel. I think I’ll wait until some people on this site read and review it before I invest any time in it.
