Book Giveaway: Talus and the Frozen King by Graham Edwards Posted at 1:31 PM by Dave Post

Dave Post

SolarisHow about another giveaway?  This time we have a brand new book coming out from Solaris on March 26th:  Talus and the Frozen King by Graham Edwards.

Meet Talus – the Bronze Age Detective! Even at the dawn of society, murder is an ancient habit. But Talus is the first man who understands that the identity of an unknown killer can be found, if you can start asking the right questions.

Neither historical fantasy nor crime fiction has ever seen anything like Talus before.   Edwards brings a unique character to the world of crime fiction while blending myth, legend, and fantasy into a rich tapestry about a bright light amidst humanity’s darkest dawn.

A Bronze Age Holmes and Watson?  Sounds like a lot of fun and the cover art is just awesome.  Join our re-tweet contest for your shot at getting one of five autographed paperback copies before it’s released to the public.  All you have to do is re-tweet this tweet:

…or comment here in the blog to enter the contest. Do both and double your chances! It’s about as easy as we can make it. We’ll have a random drawing from our re-tweeter pool and announce the winners next Wednesday so tweet away and don’t forget to tell your friends.

Talus and the Frozen KingTalus and the Frozen King
by Graham Edwards

Meet Talus – the world’s first detective.

A dead warrior king frozen in winter ice. Six grieving sons, each with his own reason to kill. Two weary travelers caught up in a web of suspicion and deceit.

In a distant time long before our own, wandering bard Talus and his companion Bran journey to the island realm of Creyak, where the king has been murdered. From clues scattered among the island’s mysterious barrows and stone circles, they begin their search for his killer. But do the answers lie in this world or the next?

Nobody is above suspicion, from the king’s heir to the tribal shaman, from the servant woman steeped in herb-lore to the visiting warlord whose unexpected arrival throws the whole tribe into confusion. And when death strikes again, Talus and Bran realise nothing is what it seems.

Creyak is place of secrets and spirits, mystery and myth. It will take a clever man indeed to unravel the truth. The kind of man this ancient world has not seen before.

What people are saying:

“A close cousin to the writings of Conan Doyle, Christie, and Marsh… Mystery fans will look forward to Talus’s future investigations.” — Publisher’s Weekly

“I think both mystery and fantasy readers alike will feel right at home with this one. A very entertaining and fast read.”The Bibliosanctum

“It all makes for a pretty fast, intense mystery as shadows thicken, nothing is as it seems and men start to die all around.”Drunken Dragon Reviews

Graham EdwardsAbout the Author:

Graham Edwards was born in England near Glastonbury Tor and now lives in Nottingham (not such a big leap from King Arthur to Robin Hood). His formative years were spent on the UK’s Jurassic Coast making disturbing movies on Super-8 film. Since then he’s worked as a graphic designer and animator. He’s also written and produced multimedia shows for theme parks and visitor centres.

Graham’s first novel Dragoncharm was inspired by Watership Down – if Richard Adams could write an epic adventure about rabbits, why not do the same for dragons? His later novels include Stone & Sky, in which he explored the dizzying heights of a world-sized wall, traveled in time and played with fairies.

There’s short fiction in the form of The String City Mysteries, a series of ebooks about a detective working in a town where the dimensions are really messed-up. Graham’s also ghostwritten several books in collaboration with book packagers Working Partners.

Our thanks to Solaris and Graham Edwards for the excellent prizes and best of luck to everyone. Help us spread the word and be sure to come back next Wednesday to see if you’ve won!

Book Giveaway: Songs of the Earth, Trinity Rising and The Raven’s Shadow by Elspeth Cooper! Posted at 4:32 PM by Dave Post

Dave Post

TorIt seems like it’s been awhile since we last had a book giveaway so we thought now would be a good time to do another.  But not just a regular book giveaway.  How about five copies of the first three books of Elspeth Cooper‘s Wild Hunt Quartet?  That’s right, all three books!

The folks at Tor are excited to be bringing out the third volume in the the Wild Hunt series, The Raven’s Shadow (on sale tomorrow!) and to celebrate they’ve asked us to help them give out five hardcover copies and, since it is the third book in the series, they decided to throw in the first 2 paperback books, Songs of the Earth and Trinity Rising, as well so you can get the whole story thus far!

The Raven's ShadowThe Raven’s Shadow
by Elspeth Cooper

The Raven’s Shadow, the third book of Elspeth Cooper’s The Wild Hunt series finds war brewing on both sides of the Veil between the worlds.

The desert of Gimrael is aflame with violence, and in the far north an ancient hatred is about to spill over into the renewal of a war that, a thousand years ago, forged an empire. This time, it may shatter one.

Wrestling with his failing grip on the power of the Song, and still trying to come to terms with the horrifying events he witnessed in El Maqqam, Gair returns to the mainland with only one thing on his mind: vengeance. It may cost him his life, but when everything that he had to live for is being stripped away from him, that may be a fair price to pay.

Old friends and old foes converge in a battle of wills to stem the tide of the Nimrothi clans as they charge south to reclaim the lands lost in the Founding Wars. If they succeed, the rest of the empire may be their next target. And with the Wild Hunt at their head, the overstretched Imperial Army may not be enough to stop them.

What people are saying:

“If you are not already familiar with her work, then I implore you to read one of her books, you will not be disappointed.” — Fantasy Book Review

“This isn’t a book that you can easily put down once you begin” — SF Book Reviews (of Songs of the Earth)

“The absorbing narrative and sheer quality of the production will keep readers impatiently awaiting the next installment”Kirkus Reviews

“In scope, this series has the potential to rival George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and should enjoy a wide readership of young adult  as well as adult fans of epic fantasy”Library Journal (starred review)

Elspeth CooperAbout the Author:

Elspeth Cooper was born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England. A fantasy reader from an early age, she began writing her own stories when still a child and never quite grew out of it.

In 2009, ill-health forced her to give up a 21-year career in IT and now she writes full-time. Songs of the Earth, published in 2011 by Gollancz, was her first novel, and the first in The Wild Hunt Quartet.

A sword-owning, tea-drinking imagineer, she lives in Northumberland with her husband and two cats in a house full of books.

If you are not familiar with Elspeth Cooper you can read full chapter excerpts of all three books right here on WWEnd to get a taste.  Ms. Cooper is also a perfect fit for several of our Roll-Your-Own Reading Challenges like the 2014 Women of Genre Fiction and, because this is a three book giveaway, The Number of the Counting Shall be Three.

Our thanks to Tor for the excellent prizes and best of luck to everyone. Help us spread the word and be sure to come back next Monday to see if you’ve won!

Book Giveaway: Tales From High Hallack – The Collected Short Stories of Andre Norton, Volume: 1 Posted at 12:34 PM by Dave Post

Dave Post

PremierDigitalPublishingIt’s time again to kick off another free book contest!  What’s that I hear?  We’re giving away too many books?  Well, if you think so, I guess we could stop…  What?  Oh, you DO want more free books!  I thought so.

The kind folks at Premier Digital Publishing have recently launched a new 3 part collection of works by the legendary Andre Norton and they wanted us to help them give out five paperback copies of Tales From High Hallack – The Collected Short Stories of Andre Norton, Volume: 1.  And, because we love you so, we of course said:  “Oh, Hell yes!”

From their press release:

For the first time, a collection of short stories by Andre Norton are available for her loyal fans.  Still as fresh and relevant today as they were over a half-century ago, Norton’s stories have been curated in Tales From High Hallack, Volumes 1 (January 14, 2014), 2 (May 20, 2014), and 3 (Fall 2014). This collection of previously published short stories includes many themed anthologies from periodicals that are no longer in print.

Paying homage to Norton’s legacy, the collection of stories is entitled High Hallack, named after the location featured prominently in many of her works of fiction, as well as the genre writer’s library Norton opened in Tennessee. In this collection of short stories, the gates of High Hallack are now open for the world to enjoy these amazing science fiction and fantasy stories.

For your chance at one of these copies all you have to do is re-tweet this tweet:

…or comment here in the blog to enter the contest. Do both and double your chances!  We’ll have a random drawing from our re-tweeter pool and announce the winners next Thursday so tweet away and don’t forget to tell your friends.  Note:  If you leave a comment without a way for us to reach you we’re going to draw another name so please give us a twitter link or something.

Tales from High Hallack Vol. 1Tales From High Hallack – The Collected Short Stories of Andre Norton, Volume: 1
by Andre Norton

For the first time, the Grand Dame of science fiction – Andre Norton – has her short stories gathered for her fans’ reading pleasure. Tales reach back to the 1930s, as fresh and relevant today as they were when she wrote them… such was Andre’s skill. High fantasy, fables, science fiction, coming of age stories, and more fill three volumes. This impressive, must-have collection includes stories of Witch World. There are cats sprinkled here and there, as Andre treasured them so. And there is magic in the writing, unequaled prose to delight readers of all ages.

High Hallack was a place in Andre’s fiction, and was also the name of her genre writer’s library she opened in Tennessee. It is a wondrous keep that she called home, and now High Hallack opens its gates and allows these amazing stories to tumble out.

Lose yourself in her enchanted words, and read them again and again.

About the Author:

Andre NortonAndre Norton’s career began in the Cleveland Library System in the 1930s, then with a position as a special librarian in the cataloging department of the Library of Congress. Her first published science fiction work was short novella, The People of the Crater, which appeared under the name Andrew North. With series such as The Time Traders, Solar Queen, Forerunner, Beast Master, Crosstime, and Janus, as well as many stand-alone novels, her tales of adventure have drawn countless readers to the science fiction genre.

Although her work has encompassed many genres, Andre Norton is probably most famous for her fantasy, in particular the Witch World series, begun in 1963 with the Hugo-nominated book of the same name. Her unprecedented success in publishing has inspired generations of writers and paved the way for other women looking to break into the male dominated genre.

Traitor's BladeTraitor’s Blade
by Sebastien de Castell

The first in a new action-filled quartet Traitor’s Blade follows Falcio, the first Cantor of the Greatcoats.  Trained in the fighting arts and the laws of Tristia, the Greatcoats are traveling Magisters upholding the King’s Law.  They are heroes.  Or at least they were.

When the Greatcoats stood aside and allowed the Dukes to take the kingdom and impale their King’s head on a spike that all changed.  Now Tristia is on the verge of collapse and the barbarians are sniffing at the borders whilst the Dukes bring chaos to the land.

The Greatcoats are scattered far and wide, reviled as traitors, their legendary coats in tatters.  All they have left are the promises they made to King Paelis, to carry out one final mission.  But if they have any hope of fulfilling the King’s dream the divided Greatcoats must reunite, or they will again have to stand aside as they watch their world burn . . .

What people are saying:

“A wild dance of fights, treachery, and jaw-dropping surprises.” — Dave Duncan, Bestselling Author of King of Swords

“De Castell combines the best of Joe Abercromie and Alexandre Dumas.  He can break your heart and spike your adrenalin with the same sentence.  Riveting.” — Violete Malan, Author of Path of the Sun and The Storm Witch

Sebastien de CastellAbout the Author:

Sebastien de Castell had just finished a degree in Archaeology when he started work on his first dig.  Four hours later he realised how much he hated archaeology and left to pursue a very focused career as a musician, ombudsman, interaction designer, fight choreographer, teacher, project manager, actor, and product strategist.  He lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife.

The best of Joe Abercrombie and Alexandre Dumas?  This I gotta read!  What do you think?

Book Giveaway: Wolves by Simon Ings! Posted at 1:46 PM by Dave Post

Dave Post

GollanczToday we have something really special to give away from the fine folks at Gollancz: 5 autographed paperback copies of Wolves by Simon Ings!  The cover art is stunning and artist Jeff Alan Love has designed the covers for a collectable set of paperbacks re-launching Simon Ings’ backlist: Hot Head, Headlong, City of the Iron Fish, Hotwire and Painkillers, (Gollancz, February – June 2014).

From Gollancz:  Wolves is set tomorrow and round the corner (Simon’s debut was a much more ‘conventional’ twisted cyberpunk tale) but manages to carry a heavy load of genuine strangeness and terror. This is a novel about how crazed WE can become and how our technologies can make that craziness sharper and deeper. It’s also a novel about two childhood friends and the strains put on their friendship as their lives go off the rails.

It is not, I have to warn you, a bundle of laughs, but it is written with clear insight and wit and great intelligence. And the prose is to die for.

We’re proud to be publishing this book. If you like J.G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick we think you’ll love reading it. I loved it enough to buy five of Simon’s backlist (all that I could get) for Gollancz and they’ll be coming out from us through the first six months of 2014.

WolvesWolves
by Simon Ings

The new novel from Simon Ings is a story that balances on the knife blade of a new technology. Augmented Reality uses computing power to overlay a digital imagined reality over the real world. Whether it be adverts or imagined buildings and imagined people with Augmented Reality the world is no longer as it appears to you, it is as it is imagined by someone else. Ings takes the satire and mordant satirical view of J.G. Ballard and propels it into the 21st century.

Two friends are working at the cutting edge of this technology and when they are offered backing to take the idea and make it into the next global entertainment they realise that wolves hunt in this imagined world. And the wolves might be them.

A story about technology becomes a personal quest into a changed world and the pursuit of a secret from the past. A secret about a missing mother, a secret that could hide a murder. This is no dry analysis of how a technology might change us, it is a terrifying thriller, a picture of a dark tomorrow that is just around the corner.

What people are saying about Wolves:

“Ings’ return to full-throttle SF is a cause for celebration. His gift for edgy slipstream fiction makes comparisons with both JG Ballard and William Gibson apposite. Bleak, brutal and uncompromising . If there’s any justice in the world it’ll win awards.” 4.5 star review — Jonathan Wright SFX

“…a moving take of the movers and shakers of technology. Overall grade: A” — Patrick Hayes Sci-fi Pulse.Net

Simon IngsAbout the Author:

Simon Ings is the author of six previous novels and two non-fiction titles and has been published by both genre and literary lists. His debut novel HOT HEAD was widely acclaimed. He writes non-fiction for Faber, contributes to NEW SCIENTIST and is the editor of ARCFINITY magazine. He was born in 1965 and lives in London.

AstraAstra
by Naomi Foyle

Like every child in Is-Land, all Astra Ordott wants is to have her Security Shot, do her National Service and defend her Gaian homeland from Non-Lander ‘infiltrators’. But when one of her Shelter mothers, the formidable Dr. Hokma Blesser, tells her the shot will limit her chances of becoming a scientist and offers her an alternative, Astra agrees to her plan.

When the orphaned Lil arrives to share Astra’s home, Astra is torn between jealousy and fascination. Lil’s father taught her some alarming ideas about Is-Land and the world, but when she pushes Astra too far, the heartache that results goes far beyond the loss of a friend.

If she is to survive, Astra must learn to deal with devastating truths about Is-Land, Non-Land and the secret web of adult relationships that surrounds her.
