2012 British Fantasy Awards Shortlist
The British Fantasy Society has announced the shortlist for the 2012 British Fantasy Awards. This year there will be two awards in the best novel category: The August Derleth Award for best horror novel and The Robert Holdstock Award for best fantasy novel. The shortlist is:
- The Heroes – Joe Abercrombie (Gollancz)
- 11/22/63 – Stephen King (Hodder & Stoughton)
- Cyber Circus – Kim Lakin-Smith (NewCon Press)
- A Dance with Dragons – George RR Martin (Harper Voyager)
- The Ritual – Adam Nevill (Pan)
- Among Others – Jo Walton (Tor Books)
See the official press release for the complete shortlist of all categories. Congratulations to all the nominees!
So what do you think of this lineup? How about the split between fantasy and horror? I think it’s pretty cool but only 6 novels made the list for 2 categories? Will it always be an even split between fantasy and horror in the shortlist? I can see this getting messey.

I’m in favour of the horror/fantasy split, as a fan of fantasy and not of horror, and I’m very happy to see Robert Holdstock commemorated in the name, but find the single shortlist a bit odd. Maybe it’s just a blip while they change the rules.
I do like the distinction. What is also heartening is the fact that a couple of novels, such as Among Others and Dragons, also feature strongly in other awards. Rarely do I see a consistent performer featuring in most awards, apart from a few Mieville’s or McDonalds. Like good wine the best one isn’t necessary the actual winner, but those that perform consistently across the broader awards arena. It seems, at least, that Jo Walton’s book is a must read this year! As for Horror, I still need to chomp my teeth properly into that category.
It makes even more sense when you realize that not all horror has a supernatural element to it.
